The Film

Ray Tarasi is just one of the Nittany Lions who made a special trip to share his tale about the Joe We Know. Nearly seventy men traveled to 5 different cities in the northeast to tell their story about days in “The Grand Experiment” and how it has shaped their lives. The reunions at the sites were magical.

Nearly 70 forty minute interviews, 5 cities, in 12 days. “The Joe We Know” Crew took it to the streets to find out what men had done with the lessons learned during their time in “The Grand Experiment. Back roads, cheap motels, fast food, long hours and repeated set up and tear down of the film set. How did it happen?

The Film: State College Shoot

January 7, 2012

Following sprint team project planning in mid December, 2011, TJWK Crew member Michelle Hagan began inviting players to be interviewed. State College was the first shooting location. Producer interview picks were made to anchor the project. With a mindset of “no depth chart”, selections were not made based on playing time while at State. Some selections were well known, yet most lacked public name recognition. The theme of Black Shoes, Basic Blues, No Names on the Jerseys emerged.

Scheduled in 45 minute slots, it was expected as each man finished, he may visit a while with the next man scheduled. Yet, what happened was unexpected. The 8:00 AM interviewee stayed to visit with the next man…..and the next man…..and the 8:45 AM interviewee stayed, too. The reunion was spontaneous. As each new guy arrived, no one left. Most guys did not know the others due to age differences. The common bond emerged and new relationships blossomed in the Green Room. As noon drew near, the room was filling. Stories and laughs were abundant and a food delivery intended for Crew turned the happening into a bonafide family picnic. Yep, more food and drinks were ordered.

Shortly following lunch, Lydell Mitchell, Lenny Moore, Ray “Buddy” Tesner and his wife Candy left the shoot to go visit Coach Paterno and Sue at their home. Upon departure, the others in the room issued a stern instruction to “lie” about why they were in town! Evening reports let the others know the visit was heart warming and greatly appreciated by Coach and Sue. Ironically, the afternoon visit occurred about the time the press conference announcing Bill O’Brien as Penn State’s new head football coach had concluded.

Good friends seem to be at the right place at the right time.
